Dauphin Area Retired Teachers Association (DARTA)

Dauphin Area Retired Teachers Association (DARTA)

DARTA is an active retired group in the Dauphin and surrounding area. We have over 70 paid members that receive agendas, minutes and information by email or phone. Our monthly, Tuesday breakfast or lunch meetings are held at a variety of locations and well attended by 20-30 members. Our annual October and April supper meetings usually have over 30 attending. This gives those members who are retired but possibly still working an opportunity to come out and be actively involved in the group.

Our main goals are to keep members informed on DARTA and Retired Teachers’ Association of Manitoba (RTAM) projects, issues and Committee work, provide an opportunity to socialize and provide volunteers for community events.

Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to be active and involved in our communities. It also provides members to connect and have fun. We annually volunteer at the public Terry Fox BBQ and local school run at the Credit Union Place walking track in September. We donate dainties and serve coffee for Alzheimer’s in October. We sponsor and present a wreath at the Dauphin November 11th Service. In mid-November we decorate the Watson Art Centre for the Christmas Season. During the winter we provide volunteers for Security for the Dauphin Kings Hockey games, we do this for all home games for 2 months. This requires many volunteers and therefore are usually helped by our families and friends. For the past few years we have also worked at the Junior Atom Tournament Registration Desk for 3 days in late March at both of the local rinks.

Meetings

Our DARTA group has a list of 70+ active and inactive members.  We continue to have monthly breakfast meetings with the exception of a supper meeting in October and our AGM meeting in April.  We have, once again, been graciously given space at Mountain View School Division Administration Office for our breakfast meetings.

To date, most of our membership have email access to maintain regular contact.  We have several volunteer members who assist in phoning members who do not have email contact to keep them informed of meetings and other important events of DARTA and RTAM.

An overview of the DARTA activities and events for the past year include:

  • Volunteering at the Terry Fox Fundraiser BBQ and school run
  • Helping BBQ for the Fuel Good Day fundraiser for Whitmore School sponsored by Co-op

  • The Chapter Initiative Grant will be used in June or July to tour the Farmery Estate Brewery and other local attractions in Neepawa
  • The AGM of DARTA will be held in April and the Officers for the 2020-21 year will be elected at that time.

Meetings

Our DARTA group has a list of 85+ active and inactive members. This year, DARTA has reverted back to well attended monthly catered breakfast meetings in one location.  DARTA is both fortunate and grateful to have secured breakfast meeting space at the Mountain View School Division Administration Office for the past year. Our October and April (AGM) meetings were scheduled as supper meetings to facilitate the attendance of those members who choose to substitute teach or work during the day. Currently, almost all of our members have email access for maintaining regular contact. A small group of volunteer “phoners” assist to keep regular contact with those who do not have email to relay meeting information, agendas, minutes and other important RTAM and Chapter information.

Our Social Committee works hard at organizing events throughout the year and our fantastic scrapbook of DARTA events is kept up to date by several members. It’s a great way to have a visual record of all the things we do and to display at our meetings. Some of the fun social activities we do include:

  • - Invite newly retired teachers to our September breakfast meeting and pay for their meal.

  • Attend free events at the local library.

  • Our Annual Christmas Cheer and Chat is held in December where much baking is eaten and great visiting takes place. It runs from 2:00 until 4:30 so those who are working can attend as well.

  • Road trips to places such as Clear Lake (supper and lake cruise on the Martese), International Peace Gardens, Laurier (6 course meal at the historic La Grange Restaurant), Amish Community, Duck Mountains (Prisoner of War Camp) and Ethelbert and Winnipegosis Museums to name a few.

  • Meeting door prize - gift card to Dauphin Country Fest Cinema at monthly meeting.

  • Cooking classes.

  • Our Sunshine Person sends cards to acknowledge member illness, family loss, member weddings and the birth of grandchildren.

  • Attend Mountain View Christmas Supper and Dance in December and Retirement Supper in June (President congratulates and presents a welcome package).

  • Attend RTAM AGM.

  • Have guest speakers at breakfast meetings (MVTA President, information on wills, etc.).

  • Keep members aware of events on-going in our communities that may be of interest to them.

Our DARTA members also provide an Honour Guard to member funerals on request. This is a well-received way to remember and honour fellow members.

We are a busy, active group always looking for ways to keep involved in our communities and being aware of who and what we are.
