Southwest Assiniboine Chapter of Retired Teachers

Welcome to the Southwest Assiniboine Chapter!

All are retired teachers some of whom sub for Fort La Bosse School Division.  None to my knowledge sub in Saskatchewan.  One works for Brandon University.

On September 5th, 2023 there will be elections and a new Executive and for sure a new President who has done his two years of service to the Southwest Assiniboine Chapter.

  • Our yearly dues for the Chapter would be $15.00 and not all pay them either.   Not everyone shows up for the luncheons and that’s where members pay their yearly dues.  We do not send out mail due to the expense of doing so.
  • We have three Luncheon Meetings per year … Fall, Winter, and Spring.
  • We have one Trip Day per year ……………………. Spring usually but sometimes in the summer.
  • Our Membership Number has not changed since the last report.  It is the same.
  • Our Financial Institution is the Sunrise Credit Union.  It’s major Credit Union in Southwestern Manitoba.
  • We are Incorporated.
  • We have By-Laws.

2019 was again a very successful year for our chapter.

April luncheon featured a very talented 12 year old, Ryley Jorganson, violinist.

September luncheon welcomed some new members to make our total count forty-five. Ed James reported on his trip to the 75th Anniversary of Juno Beach invasion.

Lorraine Scott chaired the meeting and Kelvon Smith was elected vice president.

In June, a number attended a production of "Strike'' at Rainbow Stage. Thank you, RTAM, for the grant which was gratefully accepted.

Pres. Joan V chaired the Nov.meeting after a delicious luncheon. Father Matt Koovisk led us in the singing of carols to celebrate the Yule season.

Each year our chapter donates $500.00 to Virden Music and Arts festival, Birdtail, Deloraine Border festivals and to the Westman Youth Choir.

Members also bring items for the local food cupboard at each luncheon.

2019 REPORT

Respectfully submitted Ben Veselovsky, President Executive:

Report to the 2019 AGM

Respectfully submitted by Lorraine Scott, President

Members: 40

Our chapter held three luncheon meetings with an average of 30 - 40 members in attendance. A guest speaker or entertainment was followed by a business meeting. At each meeting members donated prizes and winners were selected. At each meeting donations were brought for the Food Cupboard.

On April 17, 2018 our meeting focused on concerns for residents’ safety in rural areas. There has been an increase in crimes regarding trespassing on private property. An entertaining and unique skit was created by Ed Arndt who was assisted by Virden RCMP Staff Sergeant J. Frizzley and by Constable S. Sadler. An interesting question/answer session followed.

The Provincial “Ye Olde Rusty Golf Tournament” was to be held Sept 4, 2018 at Oak Island Golf Course.

September 11, 2018: Mike Anderson, local Super Thrifty pharmacist spoke of the many services available to seniors. A lengthy discussion was followed by questions posed by those who attended. Members were given a written report about our successful trip to the Dauphin Ukrainian Festival. An article was written in KIT by Ed James.

November 13, 2018: A delicious pre-Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings was served by the Catholic Women’s League. Members enjoyed Father Matt Koovisk, an accomplished pianist and singer, who led us in the spirited singing of Christmas Carols. Other festive selections were given by local members. Kathy Welsh recited “Laughter Removes the Sting”… A Greeting Card Verse which portrayed the forgetfulness of seniors. Ed Arndt wrote his humorous version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” which depicted life in a senior’s home.

Our chapter donated $500.00 to the Virden and Arts Festival, The Birdtail Festival, the Border Festival at Deloraine and the Westman Youth Choir.
