Southwest Assiniboine Chapter of Retired Teachers

We hold three luncheon meetings in a year, April, September and November, which is also the Chapter Annual Meeting. Each meeting starts with a meal.

After each lunch we have entertainment or an informational speaker. Last November we sang Christmas carols.

We support the community Food Cupboard Program by collecting food products.

We financially support some festival programs at the school level.

We send sympathy and get well cards to our colleagues as needed.

We assess membership dues.

Lorraine Scott chaired the meeting and Kelvon Smith was elected vice president.

In June, a number attended a production of "Strike'' at Rainbow Stage. Thank you, RTAM, for the grant which was gratefully accepted.

Pres. Joan V chaired the Nov.meeting after a delicious luncheon. Father Matt Koovisk led us in the singing of carols to celebrate the Yule season.

Each year our chapter donates $500.00 to Virden Music and Arts festival, Birdtail, Deloraine Border festivals and to the Westman Youth Choir.

Members also bring items for the local food cupboard at each luncheon.

Report to the 2019 AGM

Members: 40

Our chapter held three luncheon meetings with an average of 30 - 40 members in attendance. A guest speaker or entertainment was followed by a business meeting. At each meeting members donated prizes and winners were selected. At each meeting donations were brought for the Food Cupboard.

On April 17, 2018 our meeting focused on concerns for residents’ safety in rural areas. There has been an increase in crimes regarding trespassing on private property. An entertaining and unique skit was created by Ed Arndt who was assisted by Virden RCMP Staff Sergeant J. Frizzley and by Constable S. Sadler. An interesting question/answer session followed.

The Provincial “Ye Olde Rusty Golf Tournament” was to be held Sept 4, 2018 at Oak Island Golf Course.

September 11, 2018: Mike Anderson, local Super Thrifty pharmacist spoke of the many services available to seniors. A lengthy discussion was followed by questions posed by those who attended. Members were given a written report about our successful trip to the Dauphin Ukrainian Festival. An article was written in KIT by Ed James.

November 13, 2018: A delicious pre-Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings was served by the Catholic Women’s League. Members enjoyed Father Matt Koovisk, an accomplished pianist and singer, who led us in the spirited singing of Christmas Carols. Other festive selections were given by local members. Kathy Welsh recited “Laughter Removes the Sting”… A Greeting Card Verse which portrayed the forgetfulness of seniors. Ed Arndt wrote his humorous version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” which depicted life in a senior’s home.

Our chapter donated $500.00 to the Virden and Arts Festival, The Birdtail Festival, the Border Festival at Deloraine and the Westman Youth Choir.
