Since its inception in 1989, the Retired Teachers' Association of Manitoba (RTAM) has been a strong voice for retired teachers throughout the province.  RTAM, together with 21 chapters, is working to serve over 10,000 retired individuals across Manitoba and Canada.  RTAM has been and will continue to be concerned with the welfare and interests of retired teachers.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director manages the operational activities through support and guidance of the Board of Directors in the mutual goal of advancing the mission of RTAM.  The Executive Director oversees two staff, the planning and programming, human resources and administration, and financial management of RTAM.  Reporting to and working closely with the Board of Directors on governance activities is a key component of this position.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Support the governance activities of the Board of Directors and assumes responsibility for the implementation of the overall strategic direction of the RTAM, in accordance with the approved mission, vision and core values.
  • Develop and recommend policies for approval by the Board of Directors and prepares procedures to implement the approved policies.
  • Assess and report on the annual objectives and long range goals and achievements in support of advancing RTAM
  • Assess member/stakeholder needs and participate in evaluation of products, services and programs
  • Facilitate effective Board meetings and Annual General Meetings by arranging and preparing agendas, reports, minutes, and follow up on action items as directed by the Board of Directors. Also proposes topics for discussion and review as part of Board and committee meeting agendas.

Human Resources and Administration

  • Provide supervision and support to staff in accordance with human resource policies and procedures, including hiring, orientation, training, and performance management.
  • Responsible for managing all aspects of the day-to-day operation of RTAM in accordance with Board approved policies, and within established policies and procedures.
  • Creation and maintenance of a membership data base.
  • Liaise between staff and Board of Directors.

Financial Management

  • Ensure the implementation of financial management through development of the RTAM’s annual budget, maintaining appropriate accounting procedures, and providing the Board of Directors with timely finance-related reports. Monitors cash flow and administers RTAM funds in accordance with the approved budget.
  • Ensure annual audit of organization and presentation to the Board

Community Relations

  • Represent the organization to the community at large as directed by the President
  • Provide organization linkage with other organizations

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Business, Management, Economic Development, or other related fields or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of management and leadership experience, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and supporting governance activities.
  • Strong public relations skills and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in human resource and administrative management, including strategic planning, and operational planning.
  • Proficiency in financial management, including general accounting, financial statements, budget preparation, and cash flow management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Access, and Sage 50 or equivalents
  • Experience in website management and membership management an asset
