Committee Report to the Last RTAM AGM

Report to the 2018 AGM

Respectfully submitted by Carol Pelton, Chair (Winnipeg)

Members: Jack Fraser, Website Chair (Winnipeg), Ken Malcolm, Public Relations Chair (Dauphin), Doreen Sage, KIT Chair (Neepawa)

The committee reviewed the policy manual for the mandate of the communications committee and the three committees related to communications.

The strategic plan has three objectives under the Communications pillar:

a) to improve KIT (Keep in Touch) magazine;
b) to improve the website;
c) to facilitate new member participation on RTAM committees.

The committee attempted to outline the editorial process for KIT. Still outstanding is clarification from the Committee/Board establishing RTAM’s editorial philosophy for both KIT and the website.

KIT’s editorial policy, priorities, editorial process needs to be formalized in a KIT committee handbook. The website should/could have a similar policy, priority and process as KIT and it should also be put into handbook. Public Relations (PR) is working on a handbook.

I also attended the PR Committee meetings as ex-officio and as a member of the Website Committee.

Moving forward, the Communications Committee needs to look at other retired teachers’ editorial policy and process and use it to strengthen RTAM’s policies. In addition, further research on an updated website needs to continue.

Retirement is a time of transitions. Throughout your career you belonged to the Manitoba Teachers’ Society (MTS), but upon retirement you are no longer a member. The Retired Teachers’ Association of Manitoba (RTAM) exists to serve retired teachers. We invite you to join the growing number of RTAM members and enjoy the benefits of belonging.
