RTAM has 8 voluntary group insurance plans available for RTAM members.

These are: Premier Travel Plan, Medoc Travel Plan, Extended Health Care Plan, Dental Care, Life Insurance, Long Term Care, Stand Alone Trip Cancellation/Interruption & Baggage Insurance, and Home Insurance.

The Benefits Committee’s job is to review yearly with Johnson Inc. all benefit plans for content and costs for our members. Each year Johnson provides the data on the costs associated with these respective plans and recommends to the Board the terms of payment for each plan for the next year. Naturally we try to keep costs stable for the ensuing year.

As in past years, the main task of this year’s Benefits Committee was to meet and consult with our broker, Johnson Inc., to renew the Premier Travel Plan (PTP), the Extended Health Care Plan (EHCP) and the Dental Plan (DP). Johnson Inc. in turn, represents our interests to our insurer, Desjardins Financial Security/Les Assurances Desjardins. In so doing, Johnson Inc. analyses the insurer’s opening request of premiums for the upcoming year and prepares the counter proposal on our behalf.

This year’s negotiations have again been trying as the claim experience has been high and fanned by a weakened Canadian dollar, many if not most claims being paid in American funds. The insurer’s revised position at December 2017 was 12.8% (PTP), 31.4% (EHCP) and 9.6% (DP). The committee decided to subsidize the increases with half of our accumulated rate stabilization fund which stood at $171 490. The resulting increases for the 2018-19 year then stands at 12.8% (PTP), 19.9% (EHCP) and 5.0% (DP).

The committee remains concerned that the trend of the past two years may continue and is examining alternative plans, options and initiatives. One of these is a tailor-made program called THRIVE which is yet in its design stage.

The Benefits Committee also hosted a seminar for itself and the RTAM board on insurance underwriting.
