Executive Committee Update: April 2025

March 31, 2025

Executive Committee Updates

A message to the members from President, Jayesh Maniar on behalf of the RTAM Executive Committee and Board of Directors

As we transition from Winter to Spring, April brings warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours. May this month bring you happiness, relaxation, and cherished moments with your loved ones. We hope that you stay engaged in activities that keep you active and that re-energize you. We’ve heard the expression that April showers bring May flowers. We look forward to this transition.

Just as we transition from Winter into Spring, RTAM is in the middle of transitioning to a new way of doing things. The way we used to do things a few years ago are no longer valid. In compliance with the new rules and regulations for not-for-profit organizations, we had to make adjustments in how we operate. These transitions have been successful but we’ve also had some bumps along the way. We are learning from these bumps all in the interest of serving you as well as sustaining RTAM for the future.

Here are some items that we have been working on:

With support from RTAM, ACER CART, the national body that represents Canadian retired teachers, was involved in several discussions with CRTC regarding lived experience by retired teachers when dealing with their telecommunication service providers and the challenges they face. This would include experiences with purchasing plans and devices or dealing with consumer support. It was a healthy discussion with CRTC with the hope to continuing dialogue to work towards accessible and affordable products, and simplified systems to better serve the needs of Canada’s senior population.

RTAM President, Jayesh Maniar

Substitute Teacher Survey for retired teachers was launched to gain insights from substitute teachers who are RTAM members. The survey will help identify challenges faced when substituting and where RTAM can help advocate for better environment and working conditions.

Multiple school divisions and institutions are requesting volunteer and substitute teacher supports. RTAM will be establishing an online Job Board where these requests will be posted for our members information. Please note we are only posting these requests. We are not endorsing for or against any of them. Please watch our website for the Job Board to appear.

RTAM offers opportunities for members to be active and engaged. Along with our online sessions, RTAM is offering activities from the IG Walk for Alzheimer’s at the Assiniboine Park on May 24 to participating in a Goldeye’s game (June 22nd) to visiting Folklorama pavilions (August 3rd to 16th, RTAM bus trips to be determined). Please watch for more information in future RTAM E-Newsletters.

As we embrace the beauty and renewal that Spring will bring, enjoy the warmth as it begins to envelop us throughout the month of April. Be active and stay positive.

Wishing you a month full of inspiration and success.

On behalf of the Board of Directors,

Jayesh Maniar
