Serving those within RTAM who still teach part-time and help support the growing need for educators in Manitoba.
The Substitute Teacher Concerns Committee, operating under the direction of the Board of Directors and in collaboration with the Retired Teachers' Association of Manitoba (RTAM), plays a crucial role in advocating for the interests of substitute teachers across the province. The committee meets monthly throughout the year, excluding July and August, to address the unique challenges faced by substitutes in the education system. Through strategic partnerships and active representation on external committees, the group works to amplify the voices of retired teachers, ensuring that their concerns about substitute teaching are heard and acted upon.
Key issues that the committee focuses on include the lack of contract adherence, the absence of insurance coverage on job sites, inconsistent wages, and unclear or varying job descriptions for substitute teachers. By bringing these concerns to the forefront, the committee aims to foster improvements in working conditions and professional support for substitutes, while also enhancing the overall quality of education. Through its ongoing efforts, the Substitute Teacher Concerns Committee ensures that retired teachers remain an integral part of the conversation, shaping a more stable and equitable environment for substitute educators.
