JoAnn Hoyak
MacGregor, Manitoba

My experience as an educator has included teaching  Grade 7, 8, and 9 E.L.A. in Austin, Grade 10 English and Grade 12 English and World Issues in MacGregor, and Grade 10 business and Grade 12 Law also in MacGregor. I ended my career as a K to 6 music specialist at LaVerendrye School in Portage La Prairie. So, I am proud to be able to say that I have taught every grade except Grade 11 in the Manitoba Public School system.

I also enjoyed expanding my view of public education by serving three terms as a school trustee in Pine Creek School Division. It became clear to me that parents, school trustees and teachers all have the same goal—to provide the best educational experience possible for ALL the children in our care.

I subscribe to the notion that if one feels strongly about an issue, then one should accept the responsibility of stepping up and taking action to support and promote it. Therefore, I served on local MTS executives throughout my teaching time on various committees as a member or chair. These included Social, Liaison, Education Finance, Benefits and Bargaining.

Provincially, I sat on the Equality in Education Committee as it was known at the time, and enjoyed providing workshops and information sessions to teachers and students throughout the province, on a variety of topics including “The Myth of Happily Ever After”, “Time Management”, and “Stereotypical Media Images” among others.

I have concerns over the general abandonment of the defined benefit pension model, and feel obligated to offer what I can to strive to maintain it. I was a member of the RTAM Pension committee for the last two years and am co chair this year. I also am pleased to serve with the Political Advocacy group, because the goals we need to attain and the work we want to accomplish can only be achieved through legislation, or at least a sympathetic government.

I still spend a day or two a week in the schools as a “guest teacher” as we are now described, and get my kid fix that way. I also work for Brandon University and the University of Winnipeg as a Faculty Advisor and discover the new pedagogy du jour and feel privileged to experience the energy and enthusiasm of the teachers of tomorrow.

In my spare time, I am active with the local Lions club so I can contribute to my community in a practical sense. I also sit in and jam with a couple of music groups –from Rock to Sacred!  When my husband and I are not out riding our Harley, we take our Fifth wheel trailer and spend as much of the glorious Manitoba summer as possible beside water.
